I’m Dr. Mel Whalen, a licensed clinical psychologist and founder of Forest Ferns Counseling. I offer telehealth in Michigan, Texas, and New York, with care grounded in collaboration, social justice, and respect for your lived experience.
As a culturally Deaf, nonbinary clinician, I understand how identity, access, and belonging can shape the experience of seeking support. My doctoral research explored transgender identity development. I work with LGBTQ+ clients, including queer, trans, nonbinary, and asexual people, and welcome the complexity of intersecting identities.
My areas of focus include complex trauma, chronic illness and disability, life transitions, and Deaf and hard-of-hearing mental health. I also support parents of Deaf children, CODAs, and clients navigating neurodivergence.
My integrative approach draws on EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, parts work, and humanistic and narrative therapy. We work together to understand what you are carrying and build changes that fit your values and daily life.
Sessions are available in American Sign Language and English, with written communication options. To ask about availability and insurance, text 810-394-8921 or visit the Forest Ferns website. Please use text rather than voice calls.
