Welcome to Internal Control Psychiatry!
My name is Trevor Runge, and I am a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ). I provide comprehensive mental health evaluations and treatment, offering in-person sessions in the Tampa area and telehealth services statewide across Florida.
As a gay man who has been partnered for 13 years and married for 9, I am committed to supporting the LGBTQ+ community. My dedication began years ago when I volunteered as a counselor for the Nebraska AIDS Project, where I saw firsthand how providing safe, affirming spaces had a lasting positive impact on clients’ well-being. I earned my Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) through Frontier Nursing University, an institution whose core vision centers explicitly on fostering cultural safety and uplifting historically vulnerable or marginalized populations. During my clinical training, I also had the privilege of working closely with a local psychologist running therapeutic groups specifically for transgender youth and adults. Today, I am proud to bring both my personal lived experience and professional expertise to every patient I serve.

A Humanistic Approach
———————-
At Internal Control Psychiatry, I believe that mental health care should look at the entire person, not just a set of symptoms. I work with adults, offering a flexible care model that includes psychotherapy independently or seamlessly integrated with medication management.
My overall practice is rooted in a Humanistic philosophy, meaning I view you as the expert on your own life and focus heavily on your unique strengths and potential for growth. My therapy modalities include:
• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): To help you identify, understand, and reshape thought patterns that may be holding you back.
• Reality Therapy: To focus on the present, evaluate current behaviors, and empower you to make conscious choices that align with your immediate goals.
• Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): To explore the emotional bonds, attachment styles, and core patterns that influence how you connect with yourself and others.

Focus Areas
————
• Sexual Identity Exploration: Providing a safe space to explore who you are at your own pace.
• The Coming Out Process: Navigating the personal, social, and emotional steps of living your truth authentically.
• Family Reconciliation: Working through the complex dynamics, boundary-setting, and healing that often accompany family relationships.

Commitment to Excellence
————————-
My promise to every patient is to never stop learning. I actively identify and complete advanced training and specialized certifications to ensure that the treatment I provide remains at the highest standard of modern, LGBTQ+ psychiatric practice. Your identity is not a barrier to your care here—it is recognized, respected, and honored as a vital piece of who you are.
