
Dr. Danny Birkhead is a Board-Certified Pediatrician and Adolescent Medicine Physician. He completed his residency training in Pediatrics at NewYork Presbyterian – Weill Cornell Medical Center, and fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center. He currently serves as an Adolescent Medicine Attending Physician at NewYork Presbyterian-Queens and the Theresa Lang Children’s Ambulatory Center working with youth ages 10-21. He is currently a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Society of Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM), and World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH), and within SAHM, serves as a committee member on the Sexual and Gender Diverse Health Committee.
During his fellowship training, Dr. Birkhead was awarded an AAP – Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) grant, “Strengthening Gender-Affirming Care Access for NYC Youth”, partnering with numerous LGBTQ+ youth community programs to host focus groups and study barriers, facilitators and ideas to improve gender-affirming care access in NYC to inform local youth-informed advocacy agendas.
His clinical expertise and interests include LGBTQ+ health, gender-affirming care, sexual and reproductive health, STI prevention and treatment, HIV prevention (PrEP and PEP), contraception, menstrual concerns, eating disorders, mental health, substance use, primary care, and the care of medically and socially complex adolescents and young adults. Dr. Birkhead believes healthcare works best when it is collaborative, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and centered around each person’s individual goals and values.
