I focus on providing affordable and accessible mental health care in Kansas City by giving lower-cost therapy options and creating a wrap-around team for clients needing support around their emotions, and physical and nutritional health. We are a queer ran and queer affirming nonprofit and hold a strong focus on gender-affirming care.
I have been a marriage and family therapist for more than 10 years and I specialize in higher crisis areas such as suicide prevention, self-injury prevention, and eating disorder recovery. These struggles impact the queer community at a much higher rate than their cis/straight counterparts. I provide individual, relational, family, and group therapy options and works from these modalities:
Dialectic Behavioral Therapy: DBT supports clients in understanding the left and right sides of their brain and how they can work together to increase skills around interpersonal relationships, emotional regulation, and boundary development.
Narrative Therapy: We all have a story to tell and a story that may not be serving us any longer. We support you in ‘rewriting’ your story by separating the problem from our identity (you are not your problem). This allows us to build empathy and freedom to see how ‘the problem,’ at one point helped or protected you, but not anymore. We want to encourage empowerment vs. stuckness in your life story and to believe in and embrace your purpose.
Emotional-Focused Therapy: We want to support your growth and understanding of the role emotions play in your life. This theory helps you find meaning and lessons around your emotions, not just skills to regulate your temper. We will help you build awareness, acceptance, expression, utilization, healthy regulation, and transformation to strengthen the self and create new meaning in your life.
Structural therapy: We want to support you and your loved ones by helping build an understanding of how your relationships function as a system when under stress. We want to work to support and improve overall communication and encourage adjustments in the rules (sometimes fixed and/or unknown) that govern the functioning of your relationships. Put simply…there is a lot of ‘unlearning’ with this theory!
Sand tray therapy: helps clients develop and understand their experiences by engaging with the miniatures or symbols they choose. Sand tray is a sensory experience that facilitates the natural expression of emotions during therapy. Sand tray can help increase emotional expression while reducing the psychological distress of discussing traumatic events or experiences.
