As a queer, nonbinary therapist, my priority is to serve other queer clients, particularly those who are parents and/or caregivers. I deeply enjoy working with gender identity exploration, as my embodied expressive arts approach lends itself so well to deepening a sense of self, especially if that self is expanding in its authenticity, expression, and safety. In session, I often use less verbally-heavy invitations like drawing, painting, collage, movement, voicing, and guided visualization to promote client safety by allowing parts of them to be seen, heard, and felt without having to describe or explain everything. Queerness embodies itself in each person in a rich, complex energy and feeling, so I support those who yearn to know more of themselves and celebrate that self fully. I use a less “clinical” lens and language than many mental health providers, as I don’t believe in pathologizing my clients’ identities and support needs. I am able to refer out for gender affirming care support letters and trans-affirming medical care.
