My name is Sarah Catherine, and I am happy you’re here. My work as a counselor is a way to support others with connecting their own dots, to identify what feels most important, and to figure out how to cultivate and nourish those values. Most of our challenges arise from skills we developed that no longer serve us or that we have simply outgrown, and taking thoughtful time to explore and modify these skills can facilitate profound changes.
It is crucial that our work together be centered in your values, beliefs, background, and culture(s). We cannot fully envision where we would like to go without solidly acknowledging where we come from, and there is no homogenized way to do this. I will always assume that you are the expert on you, and will eagerly join you wherever you would like to begin. With that said, I recognize my privilege as a white, able-bodied clinician, and am committed to anti-racist and anti-oppression education and practice. I recognize and honor diversity, equity, and inclusion. I am a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and am happy to support trans folx with gender affirming care, including letters of support. Social justice and mental health are inextricable, and my work as a therapist is and will always be rooted in the values of accessibility and equal opportunity.
I obtained my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2018 from Northern Vermont University, and I have been working in mental health and social justice for the last 8 years in Vermont, Los Angeles, and here in Eugene. I also have backgrounds in photojournalism, studio and fine art, and am a published writer. I have additional degrees in anthropology, sociology, and art, and am internationally certified to teach English as a foreign language. I have lived in the US, several countries in Western Europe, and Mexico, and completed portions of my graduate studies in Nicaragua, Ireland, and Russia. As such, pluralism and multiculturalism are built into all of my theory and methodologies.
I am formally and comprehensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), EMDR, and art therapy and facilitation, and am designated as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional with intensive training in complex trauma/PTSD, and personality disorders. I have also spent several years doing concentrated work with folx with dual diagnoses of intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and mental health disorders. Based on the treatment plan that you and I devise together, we will decide how to best support you toward your goals. I use psycho-education and skill building in my work, as they are practical and empowering, and I tend towards postmodern and existential theories and methods that pull from biology, sociology, and psychology. This allows for a holistic approach that honors each of us as the complex and unique humans we are. Humor, authenticity, and sincerity are indispensable in what I do.
