Hello, my name is Dr. Alexander Ralys, and I am a primary care trained Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and Director of Healthcare Equality at eMed Multispecialty Group in Jacksonville, Fl. I have earned an undergraduate degree from The University of Colorado in Studio Art with a concentration in oil painting, a master’s degree from The University of South Florida in Tampa, Fl, and earned my medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, Fl. Since medical school, I have trained and worked as a primary care physician as well as worked in healthcare management, consulting, and healthcare compliance. I am committed to improving the healthcare experience for the LGBTQ+ community at all levels of care.
As an early adult, I began to wrestle with accepting my own self-identity and sexuality. For me, that process was difficult at best. Years of denial and a failure to adequately address my own identity ultimately made life much more difficult than it needed to be. Looking back now, my difficulties during that time also made clear to me that personal and systemic prejudices and disparities still exist in this world and, unfortunately, have very real-world consequences.
While aspects of my past have been difficult, I believe strongly it is possible to benefit from the outcome of a situation without enjoying the journey. My experiences have shaped my commitment to decreasing barriers for other members of the LGBTQ+ community and have given me a vision for how to help others. I am now able to live an authentic version of my own life I never previously thought possible, and I am passionate about affording others who are struggling the same opportunity. My past has given me the tools to address LGBTQ+ issues through problem awareness, understanding the unique healthcare needs of LGBTQ+ patients, providing a safe and inclusive healthcare environment, and addressing issues surrounding health literacy. I believe by addressing these issues publicly I can encourage a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable community.
