I am Dr. Alex Young, a Licensed Psychologist with extensive experience across diverse healthcare settings, including integrated primary care, behavioral health, and specialty services such as bariatric surgery and gastrointestinal health. My identity as a member of the LGBTQ+ community shapes my approach to providing affirming, inclusive, and empathetic care for LGBTQ+ individuals, as I deeply understand the importance of creating safe, supportive, and validating environments for all patients.
Throughout my career, I have specialized in providing LGBTQ+ affirming care, particularly in behavioral health settings. I have worked with transgender veterans at the Oklahoma VA, helping to develop outcome measures to assess satisfaction with transgender-related care. Additionally, my role involved providing psychoeducation and support around transitions, surgeries, and related healthcare needs.
I have completed numerous trainings and certifications related to LGBTQ+ mental health, cultural competence, and health equity. This includes participation in national initiatives and symposiums, such as the National LGBTQ Health Conference and the American Psychological Association’s Division 44 (Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity). I have also contributed to the advancement of LGBTQ+ health through published research and presentations on topics such as culturally informed diagnosing and intersectionality in health care.
In my practice, I utilize evidence-based therapeutic approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) to address the unique mental health needs of LGBTQ+ individuals. My goal is to offer care that is not only effective but deeply affirming, ensuring patients feel heard, valued, and respected. I also provide pre-surgical evaluations for a variety of issues from gender affirming surgery to bariatric surgery and more.
