I have entered into a healthcare role and orthopedic physical therapy practice as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and have myself experienced supportive and unsupportive environments. I have engaged in conversation in support of myself and my community. I have been pleasantly surprised by my employer and many of my own patients and their support of me and my community. I have seen the change of mindset of professors, family, friends, and co-workers toward our community and work to support these positive changes. I have worked with individuals in our community on orthopedic-related issues and have offered support and referral when needed to other providers. I continue to advocate for changes at my place of employment to show support for the LGBTQ+ community such as asking for pronouns on registration forms in addition to “sex” assigned at birth, instead of “gender” assigned at birth.
Claire has been my PT for about two years now, (I have a rare condition that has required ongoing treatment), and she has been absolutely amazing the entire time! She has worked with me to do telehealth when I’m unable to attend in person, and has shown her continuing education knowledge many times when working with me, which all points to her level of dedication to providing high quality, inclusive services. I have a somewhat unique family situation, am part of the community, and while I haven’t openly told her about it, I think she knows 🙂 she deeply connects with her patients, and I’ve enjoyed listening to stories about her beautiful LGBTQ+ family while she performs manual therapy and progress testing 🙂
I’ve been in PT for many reasons over my lifetime, and while almost all of my therapists have been wonderful, Claire really takes the top spot! Her kindness, empathy, knowledge and skill set, and dedication to improving herself as a therapist make her stand out. I recommend her wholeheartedly, and hope that others in our community can be welcomed by her and/or her supportive coworkers.
