Aloha,
I am a transgender woman, and a pediatrician who has been in practice for almost 40 years. My pronouns are she/her. I transitioned in my 50-60s socially, medically, and surgically so I can speak from personal experience about transitioning. I was not that dysphoric as a teen so I have less personal experience as a young person feeling dysphoric, but the dysphoria I felt during my adulthood prior to transitioning was significant. I’m lucky to have a supportive family though my wife of 40 years still struggles with me being trans. I do usual pediatric care, seeing kids of all ages for their well visits as well as for illnesses. I believe that healthcare is a partnership between the provider and the patient/parents. I do follow AAP/WPATH guidelines, but am open to a conversation about different approaches. For trans keiki, I can prescribe blockers as well as hormonal therapy and can help with social transitioning. I refer to local therapists for behavioral health concerns. I will also see young adults up to about age 25. I am a WPATH member and have taken the Advanced Medical Course. I am also part of a team that, in conjunction with Stanford University, Department of Pediatric Endocrinology, is trying to both improve the knowledge that providers have about trans kids, as well as helping these providers be more comfortable in treating trans youth.
Dr Lum was our pediatrician for 20-some years before she transitioned. We were always impressed with Dr Lum’s kind, gentle and caring medical attention. I cannot indorse her medical care enough and we are grateful and supportive beyond words that she has continued to work in the medical field both as a pediatrician and care giver for the PANS community. I’m certain you will not find a more caring advocate for you and your child.
