I have been a practicing psychiatrist for 50 years and have 2 practices, both of which are telehealth. I work half-time for Appalachian Regional Healthcare in SE KY (WWW.arh.org) covering 19 counties with the hub being in Hazard (Perry Co). It is through this portal that I reach the underserved of the area with both psychiatric and substance use issues and accept insurance. The other practice is in North Carolina as Alignment Behavioral Consulting, where I am able to provide therapy and some medication management. This practice is private pay only, but I work to keep the cost lower to make it affordable. My experience is varied with inpatient and outpatient and “cradle to grave.” I prefer outpatient therapy, where I can help with significant life changes instead of inpatient crisis stabilization. I have seen that the LGBTQ+ is inadequately served and, with the present hostile environment, has become even more of a target with just being alive has the power of producing PTSD. I believe in a more holistic approach with good nutrition as foundational, as well as exercise and meditation.

A truly holistic psychiatrist who provides holistic care that is tailored to the uniqueness of each unique individual. Dr. Cook is a physician who will walk into each consultation with the belief that each unique individual is a partner in their own care, and that recovery for a person in need of care will never come from the paternalism that is often evident in this industry. He will listen. He will empathise. He will work to help each client realise and discover the internal strength that they had and will have again.
Dr Cook will never know the depth of my gratitude to him. He honestly rescued our family. My son was misdiagnosed. My husband was struggling with addiction and ptsd.
Dr Cook helped me understand how food allergies were literally torturing my son. He helped us find the right meds, therapy, and lifestyle. He helped us obtain appropriate school support.
Today, my son has grown to be a delightful man with a great future. My husband is healthy, happy, sober, and living well.
Honestly, I’m not sure that either would be here, 10 years later, had it not been for this amazing doctor. He listens. He cares.
Dr. Cook is brilliant! He is very attentive, which is quite different from other mental health professionals I have worked with. He is very professional, but not stuffy and cold. He has a great sense of humor and insight-so he understands the difference between my negative self-talk and my dark humor (which is typically how I cope with trauma). Ultimately, this is someone who is multifaceted and can follow the pace that you set, in an authentic manner!
Dr. Cook is a 10/10 in my eyes!
As a colleague of Dr. Cook, I am aware of his impeccable services. As an R.N. with over 40 years of practice, I highly recommend him.
I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Cook while operating an art and outdoor adventure program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in rural WNC. With his help and experience, we were able to reduce – and in some cases, eliminate – medications that other doctors had prescribed. Participants were both emotionally and physically better because of Dr. Cook’s approach to treatment.
