Working with LGBTQ+ individuals and couples is not a peripheral part of my practice, it’s central to it. A significant portion of my caseload is made up of queer, trans, and gender-expansive clients, and this work is something I approach with genuine investment, ongoing learning, and deep respect for the complexity of queer and trans experience.
I provide affirming, trauma-informed, psychodynamic therapy for gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming individuals and couples in New York City and across New York State. I also work with clients exploring kink and non-monogamous relationships, and I approach questions of sexuality, desire, and relational structure with curiosity and without judgment.
My clinical work with LGBTQ+ clients spans a wide range of experiences and concerns, including:
– Gender identity exploration and gender transition, including the emotional and relational dimensions of transitioning and navigating systems of care. This can involve family rejection and estrangement and the particular grief that comes with losing or renegotiating family relationships after coming out
– Religious or cultural trauma, including the lasting impact of growing up in communities where LGBTQ+ identity was condemned, pathologized, or rendered invisible
– Sexual trauma, including childhood sexual abuse and trauma within relationships, and how these experiences intersect with identity, embodiment, and safety
– Internalized homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia, and how these shape self-worth, relationships, and the ability to be fully known by others
– Queer relationship dynamics, including same-sex partnerships, non-monogamous and polyamorous relationships, and the relational patterns specific to queer attachment and intimacy
– Identity exploration across the full spectrum of sexual orientation and gender identity, including clients who are questioning, newly out, or navigating complex intersections of identity
– Minority stress and the cumulative emotional impact of navigating discrimination, microaggressions, visibility, and safety in professional and social environments
– LGBTQ+ experience in high-pressure professional settings, including the exhaustion of code-switching, anxiety around disclosure, and the conflict between authenticity and career
My approach is depth-oriented and relational. I work psychodynamically, which means we explore not just current symptoms or concerns but the deeper emotional and relational patterns shaping how you experience yourself and others. This can include how early experiences of rejection, invisibility, or conditional acceptance may have shaped your attachment patterns, your relationship to your own identity, and how safe it feels to be fully seen.
I integrate Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic and body-based approaches, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples. For clients navigating trauma, including the complex trauma that often accompanies family rejection, religious harm, or sexual abuse, I work at a pace the nervous system can tolerate, prioritizing safety and internal stability before moving into deeper exploration.
I participate in ongoing peer consultation focused specifically on thoughtful, nuanced clinical work with queer and trans clients. This consultation community reflects a shared commitment to staying current, staying humble, and doing this work with the care it deserves.
You do not need to educate me on basic LGBTQ+ experiences, terminology, or community norms. You do not need to spend session time explaining your identity or your life. We can begin from a place of shared understanding and get to the work that actually matters to you.
I offer a free consultation for prospective clients to ask questions, get a sense of how I work, and determine whether working together feels like a good fit.
