As a queer, nonbinary immigrant from Uganda, I bring a unique perspective shaped by my lived experiences at the intersection of race, gender, and migration. Moving to the United States at age 12 required me to adapt to a new culture while navigating the challenges of being visibly melanated in predominantly white spaces. This transition profoundly impacted my mental health, particularly within an emotionally unsafe home environment that was compounded by homophobia and stigma around queerness and mental illness. I understand firsthand the struggles faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly queer people of color, who must constantly navigate societal expectations that often conflict with their identities.
LGBTQ+ Services and Focus
As a certified Peer Support Specialist (PSS), I provide mental health and peer support services, focusing on LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds. My work emphasizes creating safe, affirming spaces where people feel understood and supported in their unique journeys.
I specialize in somatic-based trauma recovery, drawing from Somatic Abolition–a holistic approach that centers the body’s experiences in healing trauma, particularly racialized and LGBTQ+ trauma. This method has guided my own healing process, and I now apply it to the people I support to foster deep healing and reconnection with their bodies.
In addition, I incorporate anti-colonial healing approaches, centering Indigenous and ethnic practices that honor the diverse experiences of queer and gender-nonconforming individuals. My goal is to help those I support reclaim their identities and narratives, allowing for meaningful connections to self and community while disrupting harmful colonial systems of care. I provide affirming, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive support that recognizes the complexities of navigating queerness in a world that is often unwelcoming to nontraditional identities.
Education and Experience
I am currently pursuing a degree in Psychology with a focus on brain science and mental health. As I advance in my academic journey, I aim to deepen my understanding of trauma, adverse experiences, and their impacts on the brain and nervous system. I am particularly interested in how individuals, as well as communities, can find lasting healing while still living within the systems that caused harm, and how they can lead safe, fulfilling, and centered lives even under oppressive structures.
With over a year of experience as a Peer Support Specialist, I have worked with individuals facing mental health challenges, trauma, and systemic oppression. In addition to my certification, I bring extensive knowledge of healing modalities, including somatic therapy, trauma recovery, mindfulness, and harm reduction. I am committed to fostering an inclusive, compassionate, and respectful environment for LGBTQ+ individuals seeking care and support.
Commitment to LGBTQ+ Equity and Affirmation
As someone deeply involved in the queer community, I understand the importance of visibility, safety, and affirmation. My personal journey and professional training equip me to support individuals in their mental, emotional, and spiritual healing, especially those grappling with the impacts of queerness, race, and gender identity. I aim to decentralize colonized approaches to healing, elevating practices rooted in respect for culture, identity, and the body.
