I am a predominantly hetero-cis man whose mother is a lesbian and whose daughter is queer. When I was younger I took part in protests with Act Up in Philadelphia. I’ve lived with and worked with LGBQ people throughout my life. My wife is a massage therapist who practices with me. She volunteered at GMAC in New York in the 1980s. We have both worked with people with AIDS since the 80s for her, and early 90s for me. My daughter was instrumental in my understanding of transgender issues and has allowed me to be a better ally to my trans patients.
Before going to chiropractic school, I was a massage therapist. I met my wife in massage school in New Mexico. The school that we went to was putting together the foundation of a Naturopathic program where I was introduced to Applied Kinesiology, nutrition, Homeopathy, herbalism, as well as Ortho-Bionomy®. In chiropractic school, I became enamored by gentle upper cervical work.
The body tells all of the body parts what to do through the brain, brainstem, spinal cord, and nerves. When we have an injury, the weakest link in our spine is in the upper neck. It doesn’t have the boney locks like the rest of the spinal vertebrae. Because of this, it can get shifted and wedged out of position. When it does so there is a deep twist in the spine causing the hips to twist and a leg to go short. The twist also causes a bunch of back muscles to go weak, impeding our fight against gravity and leaving us vulnerable to injury.
My first goal with each patient is to untwist the spine and strengthen these postural muscles do this by using gentle to firm pressure behind the ear to coax the first bone in the neck back into proper position.
My goal with my patients is to help redefine what is normal for our bodies and to help bring comfort and ease to the world.
