As a queer man, I have long been conscious of the unique needs of sexual and gender minorities, such as the role crystal methamphetamine/chemsex has facilitating sexual intimacy and higher rates of cannabis, alcohol, and nicotine/tobacco use. I pursued credentialing in HIV medicine through the American Academy of HIV Medicine during residency, further sexual health and STI training, and completed a fellowship in Addiction Medicine. I concurrently have participated in research looking at sexual and gender minority health in both domains, as well as people with disabilities and the intersection. I partner with the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinic’s LGBTQ+ Clinic to provide education and connection to substance use harm reduction and cessation, including medications for addiction treatment (MAT).
