In addition to membership in NYSPA, APA, NAN, NYSAN, and AASM, I also have been involved with the Trevor Project. My clinical experience includes having worked with gay patients.
As a psychologist, I offer compassionate care to my patients. Using EFT to help patients affirm their identity, their self-concept improves. Stress, as indicated in the course I just completed on MH and LGBTQ+ people, is addressed with CBT, EFT, and using HRV biofeedback if appropriate. Combinations of using the “Talking to the Empty Chair Technique” and practicing assertiveness and appropriate skills to avoid engaging with bad actors help empower patients to deal with potentially hostile real-life situations.
Although acceptance of non-heterosexual people is evolving to some degree, many roadblocks need to be overcome. I work with my patients to help them cope with the stress they may encounter but also help them develop an increased sense of empowerment. I have helped people with stress-related conditions using biofeedback, diaphragmatic breathing, tai chi, chi gong, and EFT.
