I have been a nurse for over 35 years and worked in many specialities. I started in Oncology in the 80’s to help my LGBTQ+ community who were affected with the AIDS epidemic. Living in Arkansas and being from Texas I was amazed at how the Arkansas families were supportive of thier children/family member who suffered with AIDS. During my time in oncology and seeing the need to help other mentally with thier diseases guided me to work more in psychiatry and get more educated in psychiatric care for patients. I returned back to oncology because my work was not done there. I have used my psychiatric training and kept building it through academic means, life journey, and many conversations with all different types of communities. My ultimate goal as a psychatric mental health nurse practitioner is to provide a calm, relaxed, safe place to allow anyone an area to find no judgement, no threat, no prejudice, and most of all no stima. My core value is “Breaking stigma, building strength.”
