BACKGROUND/QUALIFICATIONS: I am an independently licensed health services psychologist (HSP) in the state of Massachusetts. I have my own private practice in East Cambridge, MA: Hopwood Counseling & Consulting https://rubenhopwood.com. I have 13 years experience as the coordinator of the Transgender Health Program of Fenway Health in Boston, MA, overseeing the growth of the program from 115 patients to over 5,000 patients. I have personally provided clinical services to over 700 gender diverse individuals as well as many other LGBQ individuals and non-LGBTQ people.
SERVICES: I provide individual psychotherapy and professional consultation and educational services. I am a nationally known speaker and consultant on working with gender diverse people in medical and mental health care. I provide CE/CME and non-credit training and supports to mental health and medical providers to improve upon and create care options for gender diverse people. I provide lectures and seminars within higher education and conferences internationally. I am a peer-reviewed published author in the areas of health care with gender diverse people, spirituality and aging in gender minority populations.
I IDENTIFY as being part of the LGBTQ community. I am a liberal (Unitarian Universalist) spiritual person who was raised in and received a graduate degree (Master of Divinity, Saint Paul School of Theology) within Christian religious traditions with additional education in Judaism and social ethics. I am specially trained in providing spiritual direction and companioning (Certificate, St Thomas University) in addition to my specialized training and education in spiritually integrative psychotherapy through my doctorate in counseling psychology and religion (PhD, Boston University). I am a parent of twins, a spouse, and a pet-owner.
MEMBERSHIPS: I am a member of WPATH (since 2006) with a Certificate of Achievement awarded in 2018 from the Global Education Initiative. I am a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) and APA Division 44 (Sexual and Gender Minority Concerns) and Division 51 (Men & Masculinities). I am a member of the Massachusetts Psychological Association.
My ideal THERAPY CLIENT is a highly self-motivated adult who is willing to work at identifying and changing ineffective patterns and beliefs in their lives to create the lives they want through long-term psychodynamic therapy. I provide out-of-network therapy to individuals only (I do not take insurance). I provide in-person and tele/video-therapy.
My ideal PROFESSIONAL CLIENTS are individual mental health and medical professionals, health care facilities, and businesses who want to learn and improve their skills in working with gender diverse people. I also particularly enjoy working with mental health professionals who want to develop clinical skills to provide spiritually integrative psychotherapy.
