As a queer cancer surgeon, I am particularly attuned to the many ways in which LGBTQ+ identifying patients can be undertreated and undereducated by care providers. In cancer screening, fertility preservation for cancer care, and cancer treatment, the vast majority of providers are not sensitive to LGBTQ+ specific needs and issues, which can result in suboptimal outcomes and management. I have trained at institutions on both sides of the spectrum, in states that welcome and encourage gender-affirming care and LGBTQ+ specific treatment plans and in states that have made appropriate care literally illegal. Presently in my own practice in Albany NY, I am able to provide cutting-edge cancer surgery care that is sensitive to the needs of the LGBTQ+ community.
