As a queer, non-binary individual myself, as well as someone who is constantly educating myself about the experiences of individuals of gender and sexuality minorities, I understand how working with someone who you can relate to, and who you know can understand, or may have even shared similar experiences to you can be incredibly healing. In addition, while two people might share a similar identity, each person is unique, and may have unique needs, goals, values, and preferences. For that reason, each person deserves individualized, person centered care.
Being able to support individuals of the LGBTQIA+, and provide a space that fosters trust, respect, and feelings of safety so that individuals can feel empowered to show up as their true self is of the utmost importance to me. Individuals of the LGBTQIA+ community deserve care that in addition to taking into consideration their identities, also affirms and advocates for them.
As a registered dietitian with a specialty in eating disorders, and having conducted research on the topic, I am highly aware of the increased eating disorder risk and prevalence among individuals of the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as the unique factors that may contribute to the development of eating disorders in this population. In addition, there are a number of different barriers for accessing treatment and support that individuals face including lack of competent care, lack of support from family and friends, and insufficient eating disorders education among providers.
This is why a crucial part of my job as a provider is to facilitate access to gender-affirming care, provide resources and support for sexual and gender minority individuals, create a safe environment, and continue to educate myself and others about the experiences of individuals of gender and sexuality minorities, the risk of developing certain disorders including eating disorders, factors that contribute to increased risk of developing an eating disorder, and policies and laws that advocate for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals.
It is my mission to provide support to individuals of this community, and help you to heal your relationship with food and your body.
