I began practicing medicine with Kaiser Permanente in 2001 in Inglewood, California, a predominantly Black, Latinix, and underserved community. During that time I became one of the only doctors to care for the practice’s LGBTQIA+ patients. There were and are so many cultural/social barriers to providing culturally, emotionally appropriate medical care, as well as gender affirming care in this particular community (just blocks from where the LA riots began). However, over time a transgender care group was formed to provide hormonal treatment and gender affirming surgery. I hope that I was a lifeline for my patients and I would like to continue this work. I am also the proud mother of two queer kids and by supporting the larger LGBTQIA+ world I am showing them the depth of my love.
