Hi! I’m Scout Bruhn (they/them), a queer, nonbinary Licensed Social Worker and child and adolescent psychotherapist in New Jersey. As a queer and nonbinary clinician, I’m passionate about creating affirming spaces where LGBTQ+ children, teens, and families can explore identity, relationships, and mental health without judgment or pressure. My work includes support around gender and sexuality exploration, coming out, names and pronouns, school-based social transition, gender dysphoria, family dynamics, anxiety, depression, and navigating minority stress.
I earned my Master of Social Work from Montclair State University with a concentration in Children, Youth & Families and my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Muhlenberg College. My clinical training includes child and adolescent psychotherapy, school-based counseling, early childhood mental health, social-emotional learning, and supporting neurodivergent children and families. My gender-affirming clinical work is informed by the WPATH Standards of Care, alongside ongoing education in LGBTQ+ mental health, gender-affirming care, child and adolescent development, and family support.
My approach is relational, strengths-based, collaborative, and playful. I draw from ACT, CBT, DBT, mindfulness, IFS-informed, narrative, person-centered, and play-based approaches, tailoring therapy to each client’s needs and interests. I believe clients are the experts on themselves, and I strive to create a space where young people can build self-understanding, coping skills, confidence, and a stronger sense of agency while being fully themselves.
Beyond clinical work, my academic and professional interests include LGBTQ+ mental health, transgender and gender-diverse communities, LGBTQ+ families, queer relationships, child welfare, and advocacy. I am committed to continuing to learn alongside the communities I serve and to providing care that is affirming, developmentally appropriate, and grounded in genuine respect. I currently provide in-person psychotherapy in New Jersey and welcome LGBTQ+ clients and families at any point in their journey.
