As a queer-identified psychologist, my clinical practice, advocacy work, training, and consultation is centered upon improving access to culturally competent, affirming, inclusive care for queer+ community members, including transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse people.
As a white, queer, cis, femme, ADHDer, It is extremely important to me to continue to pursue trainings and learning from clinicians of lived, differing, and intersecting identities. We all, providers included, bring our unique identities and perspectives into the therapy room. I believe it Is my job to ensure I am fully exploring mine, as well as my own biases and values, to offer a truly affirming, client-centered, and culturally humble approach to psychotherapy. As such, our practice hires consultants of lived experience to offer training and consultations on gender-affirming care, antiracism, neurodivergent affirming therapy, and non-monogamous relationship structures. Likewise, I prioritize investing in trainings on these topics, as led by providers of lived experience.
As a practice owner, I ask that every clinician attend these trainings and consultations and all providers attend 6+ hours of initial training to ensure competency in single-session, pay-what-you can letter writing for gender-affirming procedures. We consider it to be unacceptable for a client to be referred out because a provider has not invested in the necessary training to be able to offer this, oftentimes life-saving, service. Ideally, this service will not longer be required, as gender-diverse clients deserve full and complete bodily autonomy; however, until then, we strive to make the process as streamlined and affordable as possible.
Clinically – I offer a bi-weekly Adult Queer+ virtual therapeutic support group for clients in any of the 39 PSYPACT states. This group typically occurs every other Wednesday from 4-5pm EST; however, we may move the time to 5-6 EST in the future. This supportive, unique, queer-led space is the perfect place to gather in community for support from others with elements of shared experience. Topics vary from week to week and are usually group-led and group-centered; however, typical themes include support relating to relationship challenges (family, friends, significant others), life transitions, identity-based traumatic stress, practical and emotional support and guidance regarding gender exploration and potential congruence seeking items, substance use, depression, anxiety, emotions/stress relating to legislative and political climate, and the general bullshittery of living in a cis- and heteronormative society. Adults age 18+ are welcome to join!
I am closed for individual therapy clients at this time and have a waitlist for new LGBTQIA+ couples and families. However, if you are located in NC, I have clinicians at my practice (Be BOLD Psychology and Consulting) who would be glad to offer your individual, family, couples, or relationship support. Likewise, all of our clinicians, including myself, can author letters for gender-affirming procedures.
We also have a trans and gender-diverse resource page on our website, highlighting a variety of resources that may be of benefit to you! Check us out here: https://beboldpsychnc.com/trans-gender-diverse-resources/.
Finally, I am member of the American Psychological Association Division 44 – Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity. I am also a member of the Charlotte Transgender Healthcare Group as well as a separate gender consult group, both of which meet monthly for peer consultation and to discuss best practices in providing gender affirming care. I am familiar with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and follow the Standards of Care set forth by this organization. I was an active contributor in helping to author five statements based on psychological science to oppose the North Carolina General Assembly anti-transgender legislation, and remain an outspoken advocate for affirming care and access for gender-diverse folks.
