Dr. Daniel Stec (he/they), a native Hoosier, received their foundational nursing knowledge and training at Ivy Tech Bloomington, graduating spring of 2013. After completing their BSN in 2014 at the University of Southern Indiana, Daniel was trained as a family nurse practitioner and certified nurse midwife at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Since returning to Indiana in 2016, they have spent most of their time in the sexual and reproductive health arenas, with particular areas of expertise in helping remove stigma and fear from sexually transmitted infections and working with healthcare providers to improve their sexual health skills and knowledge.
Daniel first worked as a full-scope midwife at HealthNet in Indianapolis, providing reproductive and gynecological care in the office setting and obstetric care at IU Health Methodist Hospital. At the end of 2018, Daniel transitioned to the role of Director of Title X and School-Based Clinics with multiple locations all throughout the city in various school systems. In addition to their primary duties, Daniel also began managing PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) services to prevent new cases of HIV throughout the organization, working to integrate this therapy into primary care, pediatrics, OB/GYN, and school-based health. During this role, they received their doctorate in nursing practice (DNP) from Frontier Nursing University in 2019. While in this program, Daniel led a quality improvement project titled “Improving Extragenital Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing in an Urban Federally Qualified Health Center” where they implemented oral and anal testing of gonorrhea and chlamydia in multiple departments across the organization. They then went on to serve as the Clinic Director of the Damien Center, a large HIV service organization in Indianapolis, until 2022.
Daniel recently completed the Sexual Health Certificate Program at the University of Michigan and is pursuing certification as a Sexuality Counselor through AASECT. Outside of their occupational work, they have served in multiple roles with the Indiana Affiliate of the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) including vice-president for four years. With a never-ending supply of side projects, in 2022, Daniel started producing the monthly Queer Variety Series at the Egyptian Café & Hookah Bar in Indianapolis as a way to create a safe space for artists and the community to come together. They are currently working part-time as a telehealth PrEP and STI provider for Qcare+ as well as birth control provider for PATH4YOU. They are also the president and cofounder of a new Indiana-based nonprofit called “Y’all” which helps fill care gaps for the queer/trans community through event-based fundraising.
