I did my medical training at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine in the SF Bay Area. My residency was at the University of Arizona in Family Medicine. After that I moved back to SF and had a primary care clinic with mostly LGBTQ patients living with and without HIV. About 8 years ago, I started learning how to perform High Resolution Anoscopy to prevent anal cancer.
Because of my interest in anal cancer prevention, I was asked to start working at the University of California San Francisco Anal Neoplasia Clinic Research and Education Center. This was the first clinic in the world to prevent anal cancer. I was trained extensively by Michael Berry-Lawhorn and Naomi Jay, two of the top people in the field.
On June 1, 2022, I started working at Cedars-Sinai Anal Dysplasia Clinic at the LGBTQ+ center with Alen Voskanian.
Anal cancer is caused by HPV, Human Papillomavirus. 80-90 percent of the population has been exposed to HPV. Certain groups of people have a higher risk of developing anal cancer than the general population.
Certain groups of people have a higher risk of developing anal cancer than the general population:
Men who have sex with men
People living with HIV
Transgender women
People that are immunosuppressed such as transplant patients have a higher risk
Women with a history of cervical precancerous lesions (HSIL) or cervical cancer
People with a history of genital/anal warts
To prevent anal cancer in these high risk groups, I perform a procedure called High Resolution Anoscopy where I look for precancerous lesions and when I find them I treat them to get rid of them. The most common treatment is to numb you so you don’t feel anything and then I just perform a superficial burn to destroy the precancerous lesions.
I am a gay man currently living in West Hollywood, California.
