Jem Martin, OD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Specialty and Advanced Care, and an Attending Optometrist at New England College of Optometry Center for Eye Care at Perkins School for the Blind and Commonwealth Ave Specialty Care Department. Dr. Martin’s expertise is working with individuals with disabilities, as well as vision rehabilitation, including low vision, vision therapy, and neuro-rehabilitation.
Dr. Martin graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences in 2016. During their time at LSU, they served on the executive committee for the organization Spectrum, and was a co-coordinator for the Louisiana Queer Conference (LAQC) from 2014 to 2016. They graduated from New England College of Optometry in 2021, and was awarded the Optelec Excellence in Low Vision Award. At NECO, Dr. Martin founded PRISM, an LGBTQ+ optometric student organization. Dr. Martin completed their residency in vision rehabilitation with an emphasis in low vision at NECO in 2022, and was awarded the Alfred A. Rosenbloom, Jr. Low Vision Residency Award.
In 2023, Dr. Martin was a founding board member of PRIDE (People Respecting the Inclusivity, Diversity and Equity of LGBTQ+) OD’s, a national organization aimed to foster an environment of acceptance, respect, and empowerment for LGBTQIA+ optometrists, students, and allies.
