I am passionate about working with LGBTQ folks, to whom I have provided individual, couple, family and group therapy to adults for 35 years. My clinical social work internship for my MSW at Hunter College in 1990-1991 was at the Institute for Human Identity, a gay affirmative psychotherapy clinic. In 1995, I completed post-graduate training at the Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society; my first group in private practice was a gay men’s group. I then pursued a PhD at The Union Institute, where my 1997 dissertation, “Gay Affirmative Psychotherapy: A Phenomenological Study” was the first research study of gay affirmative psychotherapy; it was published as an article in Clinical Social Work Journal two years later. After earning a doctorate, I achieved a four-year certificate in psychoanalysis at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center, a gay affirmative psychoanalytic institute, in 2001. In 2005, I presented on “Psychosocial and Spiritual Issues in Assessment and Intervention with Sexual Minorities” at the Richmond Academy of Clinical Psychologists in Virginia. More recently, in 2015, I presented on “Cultural Issues and Relational Practice: Racial and Sexual Minorities” at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy + Psychoanalysis, where I also led a professional workshop on “Relational Practice with Clients Who Are LGBTQIA-2S” and taught a course on Relational Practice with LGBT Clients. I am currently on the faculty of the Center for Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis of New Jersey, where I led a 2023 discussion group, “Let’s Talk about Trans.” That year, I also presented on psychotherapy with LGBTQ folks at the National Association of Social Workers, New Jersey Chapter; the New Jersey Society for Clinical Social Work; and the Anatolian Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists in Turkiye, formerly known as Turkey. And in 2024, I provided a workshop on this topic to the Greater Washington Society for Clinical Social Work.
