I provide LGBTQA-sensitive, gender-affirming care, including gynecologic services, hormonal therapy, connection to psychologic and psychiatric care/support services, and referrals and support for surgical procedures and legal name/gender marker changes for adolescent and young adult patients (up to age 21) and some pediatric patients (for gender-related concerns or pediatric gynecologic concerns) through the division of Adolescent Medicine under the supervision of faculty attendings. As an adolescent medicine fellow, I also provide services such as menstrual suppression, STI testing, comprehensive contraception services, and medical management of depression/anxiety and perform private interviews with all patients. I work together with patients to provide support and engagement of their parents/guardians at the level of the patient’s choice, including when it comes to concerns regarding sexuality and gender affirmation. Some of the services we provide do not require parental consent under current Indiana law/code, but others do. Patients under 18 do need a parent or guardian to accompany them to their visit here in Indiana, whether through Riley (for all visits) or Eskenazi (for at least the initial visit), the two spaces in which I currently work. Sometimes these visits can be scheduled to provide support for other parts of adolescent care, with discussion of the gender/sexuality component only privately if that is what the patient prefers.
