Being an ally to the community means more than just showing up when it is comfortable for a person. I have chosen to be an ally all the time. I have taken multiple trainings on writing letters for gender-affirming surgeries and will also write letters for clients who only want to be seen 1x. Every month I have 2 spots dedicated for free sessions for letters for clients who are unable to pay for a letter but need it. I am currently working on my doctor of social work degree where I will be focusing on interventions with transgender clients and if the letters for surgery actually assist clients in being prepared. (My personal thoughts are no, but we will see what the research says!) Overall, I meet clients where they are at, and want them to know that this is a place where there is no judgment, and we will work through their mental health.
