As a gay man living in west michigan, I understand the unique socio-political culture that has a large impact on mental health and development for LGBTQ(IA) individuals. I have taken many courses and continuing education credit trainings on cultural competence which always discusses LBGTQ issues, though often lacks the true scope of addressing competency in this area. I have read recent literature on gender-affirming care and affirming therapy when working with adolescents and teens. My own experiences growing up in Michigan (living in Chicago and Virginia during my education/early career) have helped shape my understanding of identifying as LGBTQ and navigating social situations, romantic relationships, education and the workplace. I am also always open to learning new information, evolving compentencies, and learning from my clients.
