It is not lost on me that the prevalence of mental health issues including depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts and attempts among the LGBTQ+ community can be greatly compounded by the rigid social foundations we live within. It’s a story as old as time: those who are the minority are misunderstood and mistreated. And in the field of mental healthcare, I believe a provider must understand how this reality affects their minority patients and the nuances of their care to avoid making people feel isolated. With this in mind, I strive to create an environment in my practice that is free from judgment or prejudice, an environment where all are welcome, regardless of background or belief. Struggling with mental health is difficult; reaching out for help sometimes even more so. But at Kopas Mental Health, we work hard to ensure you won’t have to worry about being accepted and treated with compassion.
Austin Kopas, PMHNP-BC, is a Nurse Practitioner who specializes in mood disorders like depression and bipolar, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, and schizophrenia-type disorders. Before completing his psychiatric nursing graduate degree, he worked for 5 years in more medical setting, a trauma intensive care unit, treating victims after events like car crashes and gunshot wounds. Austin is inclusive of all patients and is passionate about making them feel safe, informed, and comfortable when discussing their care. He embraces a holistic practice that encourages patients to adopt evidence-based mental health routines balanced with a conservative approach to prescription medications only when necessary. Austin is a charismatic, dog-loving person who enjoys the outdoors, computer science, keeping up on the cutting-edge mental health treatments, and practicing what he preaches when it comes to meditation, sleep hygiene, natural vitamins, diet, and exercise.
