Dr. Carmen Fong earned a Doctor of Medicine in 2013 from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, where she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She completed a General Surgery residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in 2018 and was the Administrative Chief Resident in her last year. She completed a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital/NYU Winthrop. Prior to becoming Co-Director of Hemorrhoid Centers of America, affiliated with Wellstar Health System and Northside Hospitals, she was an Assistant Professor in Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
During her training, Dr. Fong won multiple awards, including the Mount Sinai Beth Israel Scholarly Achievement Award and the Mount Sinai Beth Israel Chief Resident Award. She is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, where she is on the Young Surgeons Committee and the Chair of the Outreach Subcommittee. She is a member of the Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, where she sits on the Ethics Committee and was formerly on the Health Advocacy Committee. She is a reviewer for the Surgical Endoscopy journal and a reviewer-in-training for the Surgery journal. She has been published as the lead or co-author on multiple papers and has presented her work at national and international conferences. Dr. Fong is also actively engaged in education, leadership, and volunteer roles in the medical field and beyond.
Her clinical work focuses on anorectal diseases (proctology), in particular, minimally invasive management of hemorrhoids, anal fissures, anal fistulas, and other sequelae of constipation and IBS. Her research interests include surgical management of colon cancer and diverticulitis, early age onset colorectal cancer, surgical site infections, and new technological advances in colorectal surgery.
She has taken care of patients who have had gender-affirming surgery and she serves a large LGBTQ+ population and understands their particular anorectal needs, including need for HPV screening.
Dr. Fong is the author of a non-fiction book called Constipation Nation, forthcoming from Rowman & Littlefield in 2024.
