I am a counseling psychologist and psychiatric clinical pharmacist. As the CEO of Congruence Counseling & Psychology, LLC, I provide psychotherapy, consultation, and education services. My research, clinical, and teaching/speaking interests include identity conflicts and development, cultural humility, and intersectionality, particularly the intersections of sexuality, religion/spirituality, and race/ethnicity.
My experience with LGBTQ+ care derives from both personal experience and professional training. As a Black, cisgender, gay man who was raised in a traditional faith, I invested a lot of work in my own identity-related conflicts, specifically, integrating my sexuality with my cultural and religious background. After working towards healing and internal reconciliation with my identities, I left the field of pharmacy and became a psychologist to help others deal with identity conflict and development. I received my PhD in counseling psychology from the University of Massachusetts Boston in 2018 after completing an internship at the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a specialization in LGBTQ+ psychology. My graduate school, dissertation, and subsequent research and writing have largely focused on LGBTQ+ issues and intersectionality. For example, I wrote a chapter entitled “Beyond LGBTQ-Affirmative Therapy: Fostering Growth and Healing Through Intersectionality” in the book Queer Psychology: Intersectional Perspectives (Springer, 2022).
As a psychologist, I am an active member of the American Psychological Association, particularly within Division 44 (Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity) and Division 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology). Within Division 44, I am one of the Co-Chairs of the Committee on Religion and Spirituality. I am also an active member of the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists.
