Hello All! I’m Eric Goodwin, an Oregon Licensed Professional Counselor offering online individual therapy to adults in Portland and throughout Oregon. I work with anxiety, shame, harsh self-criticism, and identity-related stress, including with many LGBTQ+ clients.
I’m also a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and Queer-affirming therapy is an important part of my practice. Shared identity does not mean I assume I know your experience. It can mean there is less basic context to explain before we can get to what is actually happening in your life. I want there to be room for how identity, relationships, family, community, belonging, and safety have shaped you without reducing everything you are struggling with to your identity.
You do not have to come to LGBTQ+ affirming therapy because you want to focus on being LGBTQ+. You may be dealing with anxiety, feeling stuck in self-criticism, struggling in relationships, or trying to understand patterns that have followed you for a long time. Your identity matters, but it does not have to become the explanation for everything.
My work draws from Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, mindfulness and mindful self-compassion, Compassion-Focused Therapy, and Person-Centered therapy. I have completed Level 1 training through the IFS Institute and extended training through the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy, which has been especially influential in how I bring mindfulness and self-compassion into my work.
I’m interested in helping people understand what is happening inside rather than immediately trying to get rid of it. Anxiety, self-criticism, shutting down, or trying hard to keep things under control often have a history. Therapy can help us become more curious about that history and about what these responses have been trying to do for you.
Over time, that understanding can make more room for choice. You may find that an old fear or critical voice still shows up without having quite as much say in what you do next. The work is collaborative, and I do not expect therapy to follow the same path for everyone.
You also do not need to arrive knowing exactly what you want from therapy or how to explain what has been difficult. We can begin with what you know and figure out the rest together.
I provide telehealth therapy for adults located anywhere in Oregon, including Portland. My practice is private pay, and sessions are $185 for 50 minutes. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation where you can tell me a little about what brings you to therapy, ask questions, and get a sense of whether working together feels like a good fit.
