Overview:
As a queer person, I understand how difficult it can be to find someone who gets you. This is especially crucial in therapy, given how vulnerable the process of exploring your mental health is. It can also be incredibly frustrating to have a therapist who doesn’t understand how being LGBTQIA+ has impacted your life, or, conversely, blames all of your mental health struggles on your LGBTQIA+ identity.
Whether you’re coming to terms with your sexuality or gender identity, needing help with issues related to being an LGBTQIA+ person (such as family issues, transitioning, or reconciling your identity and religious beliefs), or are looking to address another issue entirely while working with an affirming therapist, I would be happy to help.
Background:
I received my Doctorate of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology, and have been in private practice since 2022. I am passionate about the intersection of being LGBTQIA+ with other mental health struggles, and even wrote my dissertation on eating disorders and disordered eating among LGBT folx (https://jeatdisord.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s40337-020-00327-y).
Specialties:
I also specialize in working with Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) and other types of neurodivergence, body image and disordered eating (through a body respect, Health at Every Size perspective), and religious trauma, in addition to depression, anxiety, and trauma.
Additionally, I offer letters of support to folx wanting gender affirming surgeries.
Therapeutic Style:
I provide individual therapy to folx ages 18 and up.
My primary theoretical orientation is Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) / Gestalt Therapy, which emphasizes your emotional experience, as emotions tend to be more deeply rooted than thoughts; we will also explore the messages associated with your emotions and use them as guideposts. I also integrate Internal Family Systems (IFS), which looks at how the different parts of ourselves interact and inform who we are as a whole. Additionally, I emphasize the role of self-compassion in our relationship with ourselves.
I utilize a social justice and multicultural framework. Since the different systems of oppression that we each face— including racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, ableism, and classism— contribute significantly to our mental health, I believe it is important to address how these factors have impacted your journey when relevant.
Finally, I value having a collaborative approach. While I may be the expert in psychology, you are the expert in you. No one knows your experience better than you do. That being said, I encourage and welcome your feedback. This is your time for healing, and I want to make sure that you are getting the most out of it as possible.
