My colleagues and I at Carbon Valley Eye Care are dedicated to providing a safe and accepting space for all individuals to receive the vision care they need and deserve. I have attended continuing education seminars regarding LGBTQ+ individual’s experiences with health care and how to improve those interactions. The best teachers, though, are my patients. I have made it a point to learn from them and listen to as much as they are willing to share. A friend and colleague who she herself is part of the LGBTQ+ community has also taught me a lot. I continue to look to her as an example of how to be more mindful of my patients’ needs. She has also shown light on some of my own misconceptions and biases, for which I am very grateful. She has helped me become a better optometrist. It is my goal to create a safe and accepting environment for everyone. Empathy and empowerment are qualities that I am always striving to improve. I take the trust my patients put in me very seriously and with deep gratitude.
