I am a board certified pediatric endocrinologist with more than 15 years of experience in the field, and provide help to youth, teens, young adults, and their families who want to explore their options for gender affirming care in my pediatric endocrinology setting, following WPATH guidelines. GnRH agonists, commonly called “puberty blockers”, can safely and reversibly place puberty on pause while young people continue to grow and mature. Lupron, Triptodur, and Supprelin are most commonly used in this setting. Gender affirming medications estradiol and testosterone can be used in individuals who have had persistent gender dysphoria, are working with a mental health specialist and will be able to continue that mental health support, and have had appropriate medical screening and education. Because estradiol and testosterone are not completely reversible, it is a slower process than starting GnRH agonists, to try to ensure a safe and healthy transition in the long-term.
