Hello,
I am Dr. Michael Stinnett and I’m a licensed psychologist living in Wilmington, NC. I am a dedicated mental health professional committed to providing compassionate and evidence-based care to my clients. My focus on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and specialized support for LGBTQIA+ individuals allows me to address a wide range of mental health concerns with empathy, respect, and cultural competence.
To maintain clinical excellence, I take a multifaceted approach that includes ongoing education, specialized training, and a steadfast commitment to evidence-based practices. Recognizing the dynamic nature of the mental health field, I continually seek to stay abreast of the latest research, developments, and best practices. This commitment is reflected in my active participation in continuing education opportunities, seminars, workshops, and conferences, where I both attend and present to expand my knowledge base and refine my clinical skills.
With specialized training in LGBTQIA+ affirmative psychotherapy, I tailor my approach to meet the unique needs and experiences of each client. I strive to provide a supportive and nonjudgmental therapeutic environment, where clients feel safe to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. My compassionate approach helps build trust and rapport, facilitating meaningful therapeutic relationships and promoting positive outcomes. I adhere to evidence-based practices, ensuring that my interventions and techniques are scientifically validated for their efficacy. By integrating research-supported methods into my treatment approach, I provide my clients with the most effective and clinically proven interventions available. This dedication to evidence-based care is a cornerstone of my practice at Oceanview Mental Health and Wellness.
Collaboration and partnership are central to my therapeutic process. I work closely with my clients to develop personalized treatment plans that align with their goals, values, and preferences. By involving clients as active participants in their own care, I empower them to take ownership of their mental health and well-being.
In addition to my clinical work, I am deeply involved in various professional organizations, committees, and initiatives related to mental health, social justice, and LGBTQIA+ advocacy. I co-founded the NC Transgender and Gender Diverse Professional Consultation Team, which provides essential support and guidance to medical and mental health professionals offering gender-affirming care in Southeastern North Carolina. This initiative has been instrumental in enhancing the quality of care and ensuring that professionals are well-equipped to meet the needs of transgender and gender-diverse individuals.
I am also actively engaged with the North Carolina Psychological Association (NCPA) Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee, where I contribute to efforts aimed at promoting social justice and equity within the field of psychology. Furthermore, I serve on the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Global Education Institute (GEI) – Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement (DICE) Committee, working on a global scale to advance education and community engagement for transgender health. Previously, I served on the Huntington, WV Human Relations Commission, where I advocated for the rights and well-being of marginalized communities. These roles have allowed me to stay connected to the broader community, share knowledge and expertise, and advocate for positive changes in the field of mental health.
Through my dedication to continual learning, specialized expertise, compassionate care, evidence-based practices, collaborative approach, and professional involvement, I uphold the highest standards of care in my practice. My commitment to excellence ensures that my clients receive the best possible support on their journey to mental health and wellness.
