Philip “Tad” King, LMFT completed his Masters in Clinical Psychology at Antioch University Los Angeles, a school renowned for its focus on Social Justice in academia. He extended his graduate degree to obtain the LGBT Specialization in Clinical Psychology, the first program of its kind in the United States.
Tad is a highly trained and experienced LGBTQ-Specific mental health therapist with 16 years of counseling LGBTQ clients. He has worked primarily with clients who identify as gay or bisexual in every stage of the coming out process. Tad shared that, “As a gay man who has been out my entire adult life, I relate intimately to the challenges LGBT people face and to the ongoing problems of heteronormativity and homophobia.” He has worked extensively with gay and lesbian adults and couples utilizing well researched, highly effective therapeutic models to help couples find and rebuild the safety and responsiveness they long for in their relationships.
Tad’s work in diverse settings such as LGBT community mental health, a behavioral health & chemical dependency hospital and private practice give him the skills to tailor treatment to each individual’s needs. His approach to therapy is collaborative, empathic and empowering. His work includes helping clients who struggle with depression and anxiety, often related to growing up LGBT in a heteronormative world that still stigmatizes LGBTQ folk’s valid and natural same-sex orientations. Through an LGBTQ-affirming therapeutic lens, Tad helps clients identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors, so they can build positive self-esteem and reclaim their potential.
