Water & Stone was started when I, Emery (Founder/Director), moved to New York and noticed a need for support within the city and community for those not feeling connected to more traditional approaches or therapists. Contemplative and Transpersonal Psychotherapy brings a more mindful, humanistic, and creative approach that speaks to those who don’t feel they fit within the mainstream culture or who find themselves misunderstood by a more “typical” way of thinking.
Our mission is to create a community where people from all walks of life can explore and express themselves in a supportive environment, heal from past and current experiences or trauma, and trust they are being protected in a world that can be unpredictable or feel threatening.
Some of our goals and Values are below. They may not be able to be fully realized within society, but we hold them as possible and something to strive for on a daily basis.
Goals
Identity – striving to understand and value the way each person identifies and create a space for people to explore their own way of being in the world. This includes, but is not limited to pronouns, preferred names, and relationship styles.
Equity – make a continuous effort to adapt and customize all aspects of our practice and offerings as we address inequality and the diverse needs of our clients.
Self-Actualization – prioritize each person’s ability to realize their full potential while taking into account and honoring diverse cultural backgrounds, beliefs, values, and experiences that are different than our own.
Values
Trust – every relationship, with self or other, needs to build trust to have depth and meaning. This in turn allows for change and growth to happen.
Honesty – truth and being able to live as you are in the world with acceptance from those around you.
Curiosity – being open to many perspectives, experiences, and the world around us.
Basic Goodness – you possess an inherent nature of goodness, wisdom, and kindness, which is not something that needs to be acquired but rather something to be uncovered and cultivated.
Connection – Community matters and people are healthier when they have a community, no matter how small. We heal through connection and are protected by it as well.
Self-Reflection – all therapists and members of this community strive to continuously learn, engage in supervision, and have their own support. We do this both for our own benefit as well as to avoid putting the full burden of education onto our clients and participants.

Support Groups
Each therapist at Water & Stone has their own approach or way of working with clients, but we all come together because of our belief in people’s right to be themselves and the healing power of community.
We do offer a list of questions to see if out-of-network reimbursement for therapy sessions is an option for our clients.
