LGBTQ+ community centers across the nation serve as crucial lifelines, offering support to nearly 52,000 individuals every week, according to a survey by MAP and CenterLink. Amid a surge in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, these centers are more essential than ever, providing not just a safe haven but also a wide array of critical services such as wellness referrals, healthcare, community programming, and mental health support.
Community centers with clinics are increasingly gaining status as Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), enabling them to secure federal funding to serve lower-income and uninsured populations. However, despite the efforts of FQHCs, hospitals, clinics, and community centers to address the needs of LGBTQ+ communities, significant health disparities still remain.
This OutTalk welcomes leaders at prominent community center organizations nationwide to discuss the current landscape, explore the challenges faced, and identify innovative strategies to bridge the health gap for LGBTQ+ individuals.
