I am a neuroqueer (AuDHD), gender queer physician from The Netherlands. I run Utah’s first and largest transgender and gender-expansive/diverse clinic since 2011 and launched Rebirth Health Center (formerly Rebirth Obgyn) in 2014. I have treated well over 7500 transgender and gender-expansive/diverse patients of all ages. Our clinic is focused on healthcare for LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and Neurodivergent people and people from other minority communities. I trained with the Center for Gender Expertise in Amsterdam in 2012, and am WPATH GEI SOC8 Certified (have finished all training available from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health).
I am a board-certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist, with a subfocus on Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology from the American Board for Obstetrics and Gynecology. From 2016 to 2019 I trained for vaginoplasty with several surgeons in the USA, have an affiliation with the Crane Center for Transgender Surgery as well as the University of Utah as Adjunct Faculty, and currently perform orchiectomy at my office with an anesthesiologist. From 1999-2023 I performed laparoscopic (and robotic) hysterectomy (at least 1500), including for many trans masculine and non-binary people and trans men as I believe in bodily autonomy and the Yogyakarta Principles of Self Determination. I have delivered over 2000 babies including for non-binary, gender expansive/diverse people and trans men. I help induce lactation for transgender women or trans feminine patients who desire so for many reasons. Many of my patients are polyamorous, part of the BDSM/kink community, sex workers, or on the ACE spectrum/asexual. Many create families with the help of a surrogate, sperm donor, egg donor, adopt, or foster. I do postoperative care for patients who travel out of state for any gender-affirming surgery, including non-binary genital surgery. We provide preventive care, PrEP/PEP, STD screening, and HPV vaccinations (Monkey Pox vaccinations are available at the Health Department) and offer condoms, dams, fentanyl tests, and Narcan for free as I also believe in Harm Reduction. I co-manage patients with HIV with the University of Utah’s Department of Infectious Disease. We offer a lot of mental health care, prescribe Medical Marijuana and Suboxone, and I run a ketamine clinic as I believe psychedelic medicine can benefit the mental and physical health of LGBTQ+/BIPOC/Neurodivergent people and I try to facilitate access to psychedelic medicine for all people. I spoke at the recent USPATH conference in Denver in November 2023 on how to make your transgender clinic more neurodivergent inclusive, as well as on how to improve access to psychedelic medicine for transgender people and how to run a ketamine clinic. I present regularly at local, national, and international conferences on diverse topics regarding transgender medicine. I co-authored and co-edited “TransGynecology”, the first textbook in obstetrics and gynecology for transgender patients with Cambridge University Press. We practice trauma-responsive/informed as we see a lot of patients with a history of trauma and PTSD. We offer all gynecological services (trauma-informed pelvic examinations) as well as urological services (together with urologists). We treat adolescents with gynecological concerns (including PCOS, Hirsutism, irregular or heavy menses as well as those questioning their gender identity) as well as people who are perimenopausal or anyone struggling with life transitions affected by hormones such as in PMDD, PMS, Postpartum Depression, and Menopausal Syndrome; which are especially challenging for neurodivergent people. I am a member of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, Menopause Society, American Society of Ketamine Physicians, American College for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Utah Medical Association, and World Professional Association for Transgender Health and have spent many years in research as well as presented on topics such as premature atherosclerosis, endometriosis, pregnancy loss, artificial hearts, transgender adolescents, pelvic pain in transgender men, reproductive options for transgender people, gender-affirming hormone therapy for adolescents/adults including non-binary options, on neurodiversity, and psychedelic medicine. I have given DEI training on transgender inclusion for hospital administrators, hospital departments, operating room personnel, labor and delivery personnel, physical therapists, parents of transgender children, trained many physicians and other healthcare professionals one-on-one, and was on the Board of our local LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce helping to promote small businesses run by LGBTQ+ people (as are we), and teach corporations on how to help their employees who are transitioning on the job. A future goal is to help teach corporations, hospitals, businesses, and professionals how to be inclusive towards neurodivergent employees and coworkers. I also have a transgender teenage son. Our office also employs an electrologist for hair removal.
